Olives
The olive tree, prized for both its fruit and the oil extracted from its pulp, traditionally thrives in the Mediterranean. In 1964, the tree was introduced to China, where it found an ideal environment.
Longnan city in northwest China's Gansu Province features several dry-hot valleys with climate and soil that closely resemble those of the Mediterranean. After nearly five decades of steady cultivation, Longnan has developed over 1 million mu of olive groves, making it one of China's largest olive-growing regions.
