Toad and Jade Rabbit patterned Wadang (eaves tile), Xi'an Qin Brick and Han Tile Museum

In ancient Chinese architecture, Wadang was a kind of eaves tile that shielded the eaves of buildings and architectural accessories decorating houses. This toad and Jade Rabbit patterned Wadang is one of China’s national first-class cultural relic. With a diameter of 22 centimeters on its frontside, this Wadang is a rare giant among Han tiles. It bears the design of a galloping rabbit and a jumping toad, two mythical animals associated with the moon.

In Chinese legend, the Jade Rabbit and toad live in the moon palace along with the Chinese moon goddess Chang’e who used to be a mortal woman down on earth.
