2 dead, 9 injured in road accident in China's Kunming
KUNMING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- A traffic collision in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunan Province, on Sunday afternoon has left two people dead and nine others injured, the municipal public security authorities said on Monday.
The accident occurred at 1:16 p.m. Sunday on Jinbi Road in Xishan District, a major commercial thoroughfare in Kunming.
According to the police, a 49-year-old local man surnamed Li was driving a blue compact SUV on Jinbi Road when he collided with electric bicycles and pedestrians traveling properly along the roadway. The driver then fled the scene, during which his vehicle struck additional cars and pedestrians.
The incident resulted in two fatalities, four cases of minor injuries, and five cases of slight injuries. All injured individuals have been transported to hospitals for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The driver is currently in police custody, and preliminary investigations have confirmed that the incident is classified as a hit-and-run. Authorities have excluded alcohol or drug impairment as contributing factors.
The accident is under further investigation.
