OSLO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Norwegian police on Sunday arrested a man in connection with a shooting incident at the Tveita Center shopping mall in eastern Oslo, which left one person seriously injured.

At a press briefing, Knut Lutro of the Oslo Police District confirmed that the suspected shooter, a man in his late 20s, turned himself in at 1 pm local time on Sunday.

"He is now in police custody and will be questioned as soon as practically possible," Lutro said, adding that the suspect is known to the police from previous incidents, resides in eastern Norway, and is not a Norwegian citizen.

The shooting took place on Saturday afternoon after a confrontation between two groups escalated into violence.

According to the police, a planned meeting at the shopping mall led to an argument in a cafe area, during which one person pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots.

Witnesses reported hearing between four and six gunshots. The police said there were more than five people involved in the incident at the time, and investigations are ongoing to clarify each person's role.

One man suffered gunshot wounds and remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The victim was briefly interviewed by police and is expected to provide further information later.

"We have collected substantial video material from the scene and spoken to many witnesses," Lutro said. "Shooting in public spaces is completely unacceptable, and we are deploying all necessary resources to resolve this case."

The Tveita Center, which has about 60 stores, was closed for the rest of Saturday following the shooting.
