BELGRADE, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Overseas Chinese World Conference for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on Wednesday, with the theme of "Hand in hand, work together to promote reunification, and strive to realize the Chinese Dream."

Cai Dafeng, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and vice chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification, delivered a speech at the conference.

The reunification of China is the general trend of development and is consonant with popular sentiment, and no one or any force can stop it, Cai noted.

In the face of the new situation and challenges, it is hoped that compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese will conform to the general trend of history, safeguard the general interests of the nation, firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" and promote reunification, he said.

Cai also called for efforts to jointly safeguard the one-China principle, jointly defend the achievements of victory in World War II, jointly protect the homeland of the Chinese nation, jointly plan for the long-term well-being of the two sides of the strait, jointly promote exchanges and mutual learning between China and foreign countries, and unswervingly advance the great cause of the reunification of China in the process of comprehensively promoting the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with Chinese-style modernization.

Zheng Jianmin, president of the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots; Li Ming, Chinese ambassador to Serbia; representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council, the China Zhongshan Cultural Exchange Association, and other departments and organizations; as well as representatives from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and those, from all the continents, opposing "Taiwan independence" and promoting reunification, addressed the conference.

More than 400 people, representing over 80 peaceful national reunification promotion councils and relevant organizations, from nearly 60 countries and regions, attended the conference.
