Recently, an absurd new challenge has been gaining popularity online. As everyone knows, banana peels can make people slip and fall on their faces; now, a surprising number of people are accepting the challenge to voluntarily slip on a banana peel.
It all started with a teenaged Twitter user named Jason Oakes, who posted a video on social media. In the video, Oakes first seems to be debunking the banana peel cartoon cliché. “I thought it would be like really bad,” he says. “I’m disappointed. It really not that slipper—”
Before he can finish his sentence, Oakes hits the floor hard, and the drink in his hand spills liquid everywhere.

The video was retweeted more than 70,000 times in one day. Many teenagers across social media soon began to post their own “banana peel challenges” under the hashtag #BananaPeelChallenge. Now there are thousands of video clips online, all showing people slipping on banana peels.
However, experts have pointed out that this seemingly hilarious challenge actually has the potential to be extremely dangerous since these kinds of falls can lead to long-term or even permanent injuries.
